Regular Help

We’re looking for volunteers who will be based in the galleries to engage with visitors and assist them with their enquiries. This would be perfect for you if you enjoy working with people and would like to share your knowledge of history and make visitors feel welcome.

Gallery guides will be able to use handling objects to engage with visitors, there is also the opportunity to do talks and tours and help with evening events including lectures and cinema screenings.

Training and support will be provided.

What's involved?

  • To provide information to the visitor on the collection and  location of services. (we are not expecting them to have any special knowledge. It is much more about directing the public  to further sources of information such as guidebooks, information sheets, and to the relevant member of staff.)
  • Checking the galleries are tidy, and if not reporting this to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Use handling objects to engage with the public.
  • There will also be the opportunity to give short gallery talks/tours to visiting groups
  • Helping with evening events: We are asking volunteers to help staff our evening events: lectures, cinema, group visits, concerts and special events. You would help guide visitors in and welcome them to the museum, then you can enjoy the event for free and then help to clear the galleries after.

Gallery Stewards usually volunteer for 1-3 hour slots. We have vacancies on the following days:

Tuesday: Afternoon

Wednesday: Morning (every other) & Afternoon

Thursday: Afternoon

Friday: Morning and Afternoon
